Talking Points #1: Croteau

 Reflection:

not sure if i got the concept of the article correctly but here are some thoughts:
first i think this video sorta sums it up a little, and its somewhat funny, but then again what does that say about what we know but don't do anything about but just laugh at it.
then about the article:
i think that media plays on its audiences emotions and what they feel they can relate to, like something similar to their lives experiences, people's reality, etc...
this was the audience can buy into whatever message they are trying to portray without questioning the validity of it.
people seem to believe everything they hear or see on the media, because why else would it be there if "it was not true".
another thing that media does very well is, only focus on "news" that they want to focus on and news that they want the audience to talk about in that particular moment. this also helps cover or not really shine light on other problems that going on daily in our communities without any news coverage because it is not important or because is something we now see as normal or how things just are.
Sometimes I feel that we want to question some of the things shown on media, but since "we don't know any better" or is the only side of the story we see, we take it as being truth.
something that media does very well is portray others in "similar" situations but worse than we are, so we are content with how things are, because now we believe and see that others are worse off.
just want to touch a little about politicians just because it was mentioned in the article and that is that, politicians not only use media to their advantage against their running mate but also for their own gain. sometimes when something "leaks", it is most likely that they themselves wanting it to, so that they can flip whatever situation to their advantage.

  1. "Something that media does very well is portray others in "similar" situations but worse than we are, so we are content with how things are, because now we believe and see that others are worse off. "

This explains the popularity of many of the reality shows we have now, particularly the clearly exploitative shows like "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" and the various TLC/A&E Shows that depict people struggling with various forms of obsessions/addictions. People watch these shows in order to make themselves feel better. "Oh, my house is a mess but at least I'm not a hoarder". Or "I may not be rich but at least I'm not trashy like the Honey Boo Boo family". People go on thinking these thoughts, be it consciously or subconsciously, without questioning why the thoughts are there (or why they're even watching the show. Where their 'entertainment' is truly coming from). Why do we deem Honey Boo Boo's family as trashy? Because their lifestyle deviates from what we consider to be "normal" and thus they are deviants and deserving of our ire.

Great post, Kenia. Thanks for sharing. I particularly enjoyed the video, very funny and fits perfectly with themes brought up in your post and the article itself.

  2. I think this state farm commercial is very reflective of how we think and do things on a day to day basis Kenia. It seems that a lot of people have become robots and everything the media pr internet posts should be considered valid. Although this commercial is humorous it should actually be very shocking to us but seems like society has become so robotic and numb to realities now a days noone is truly concerned about truths and falsities.

  3. I think you did a great job interpreting the article because not does the state farm commercial make the point that the internet, and other forms of media are taken as truths, but the other stereotypes it portrays that no one questions. (the only women in the commercial happens to be the naive one, the person met on the internet is lying and ugly, and the women is only attracted to because he claimed he was model). But it harkens to the article because everything is presented as truths... as normal and common sense.
